Renate Hammond (b. 1954)

Renate Hammond is a German artist and curator who has had a significant impact on the art scene in Fürth, Bavaria, and beyond. Born in Auerbach (Oberpfalz), she studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg, where she developed her artistic style, heavily influenced by New Realism and artists like Otto Dix. Her work often features strong, vivid colors and includes satirical, socially critical themes, reflecting her interest in the absurdities and excesses of modern life.

In 1979, Hammond co-founded the *Galerie am Theater* in Fürth with her husband, John Hammond. Together, they curated numerous art exhibitions and managed the gallery until 1992. They later established the *Art-Agency Hammond* in 1993, which has since become a cornerstone of the local art community, organizing various high-profile exhibitions and art projects in cooperation with the cities of Nuremberg and Fürth.

In 2008, Renate Hammond founded a visual arts project called *Room for Humour*, focusing on humor in contemporary art. She relocated to England in 2000, where she continues to live and work. In 2019, she and her husband opened a private museum in Dover, England, showcasing their extensive collection of art, which includes many of Renate's own works.

Renate Hammond's work is known for its biting satire, often depicting the absurd and indulgent characteristics of people, which ties her work back to the tradition of New Realism.
